With Arms Wide Broken

You probably haven't heard from This Sect in quite a while. Don't worry, it's not due to your growing paranoia and consequent isolation, but the simple fact that our guitarist Tomak broke his left arm.

The accident actually happened a couple of months back, but as Tomak is a Swede guy he chose to enroll in a very experimental new form of fracture treatment. As you can see in the picture, the medical trial involved plastering his entoire body to treat the broken limb. We don't know the scientific theories behind this (the doctor mumbled something about "healing through frustration"), but the fact remains that it took Tomak's arm almost twice as long as normal to heal.

A bit frustrating for the rest of the band, as we had to let him set up his annoying Casio Rapman for band practice. Believe us, there's nothing worse than a man in body cast flopping his broken arm on that "scratch disc".

But all this is in the past now. Tomak is free from the cast and has shaved off his goatee. We have started to practice on a regular basis again and have actually churned out a few secty new tunes. This Sect hopes you're still a sectist by heart and we promise to keep you up to date and musically satisfied in the time to come!

"Bored Teenagers" at Galleri Tonne is an exhibition of subcultural images from 1979-83, by punk rock "historian"/legend Tryge Mathiesen. He wrote "Tre grep og sannheten" (Three Chords and the Truth), the only book out there on the birth of punk in Norway.

The out-of-focus and overexposed photos featured at the exhibit reveal crazy party moments from when punk rock was an infant child in remote little Norway.

See the Buzzcocks backstage at Club 7 in '79, lots of drunk local punks, Norwegian punk pioneers Hærverk gigging in Stockholm, Einstürzende Neubauten's live debut in Oslo and plenty of other shady stuff.

In addition, there's also the paintings based on unpublished amateur photos from Sex Pistols' infamous concert at Oslo's Pingvin Club, in the summer of '77.

This Sect is both humbled and excited to play at the opening of the exhibit, on August 23rd, 14:00 o'clock SHARP. The exhibit lasts until until September the 7th.

Black gold

At the Adbusters-release, some smart people dug through their archives, and unearthed Norwegian weirdo filmmaker legends Wam & Vennerød's 1975 documentary "Oljeeventyret" (The Oil Adventure). The film, which set out to document the blooming Norwegian oil industry, was funded by Norway's state channel; NRK.

According to the (kind of eccentric) filmmakers, they never intentionally wanted to make crass criticism on what was going on with the wild wild west of the black gold. It just turned out that way. Some of those worker bees they interviewed didn't seem too happy...

When the finished product got screened for the channel's board of directives, they decided on not showing it. Until now, that it is. See it on their archival web-TV, NRK GULL.

On Saturday June 28th we'll be playing at the release party of Vreng, the magazine of the Norwegian branch of Adbusters. This will be the last issue ever of the magazine. Vreng can be translated as both "turn inside out" and "distort". On this special evening, This Sect will do both.

The party is held at Blå (Oslo), and we'll share the stage with the brilliant electroduo Beneva vs. Clark Nova. They sound like two men being hospitalized when only one had to be. Add 5 sectists, a brand new magazine and an oil flick from 1976 to that equation, and it all adds up to only 50 NOK!

On April 26th were playing at Checkpoint Charlie in Stavanger Oil City with local legends Teeny Grownups.

Besides having crushes all the time and generally little control of their limbs, the Teenys play indie guitar pop with sentimental lyrics.

Sleeping Hands

The release party for the DISTRESS SIGNALS EP last night went really well!

We knew we were headed for a special evening when a drunken Freemason dude showed up. He had been at one of those secret gatherings at The Norwegian Freemason Society next door. The seriously wasted Freemason dude got booted out of the top secret meeting, went past the venue we were at, and got curious when he saw the poster announcing some kind of "sect". Step right in!

The dude was dressed up like a senior citizen lawyer type. His main concern was that he didn´t fit our "dress code". This was a point he put across to randomly selected sectists as he claimed to be dressed up as a "cunt". He didn´t look like one to This Sect. We´ve seen that particular part of the female anatomy, and it didn´t look anything like him. If it did, we would all be gay.

This Sect welcomes all party people. If you´re reading this, Mr. Drunken Freemason Dude: We know you left early, and we hope you got home safe. Enjoy the EP. And know that we bear no ill will to the Freemasons. Those cloaks look pretty cool, and the logo is rad. Where can we get the t-shirts? Stickers? Merchandise possibilities aplenty!

Mix completed

Yesterday, the final mix of This Sect's next EP "Distress Signals" was completed with producer Gunnar Kjellsby at the controls. We have to admit we're very excited about the sound of this new recording! The EP will be mastered at Strype Audio in two weeks.

"Distress Signals" is scheduled for release in February 2007.

And by the way, we ended up with a heavy bronze medal around our necks in the Death Match Finale.

Waldemar Hepstein takes cover

The legendary underground cartoonist/illustrator "Uncle" Waldemar Hepstein has picked up his long lost pen to make the cover art for This Sect's upcoming EP, "Distress Signals".

In collusion with prominent Sect members, Hepstein has created a magnificently dark and disturbing concept. The perfect visualization of This Sect's music and Gorak's lyrics.

Mr. Hepstein has been an avid Sect fan since the band's stumbling first steps in 2003. Hepstein himself has played organ in Jokke & Valentinerne and made the beautiful ballad "Nei, heng fru Hitler i et badekar" (roughly translated to "No, hang Mrs. Hitler in a bathtub").

Mullah Fossmo comes clean - admits murder and reveals sectist introspection

As previously reported by our thoroughly researching staff at the thissect.com news section head quarters, Scandinavian-wide infamous psycho killer accomplice Helge Fossmo is digging the sectist sounds. The photograph of him standing in front of his bathroom mirror, forehead bloody, created a stir in 2004.

In a television interview broadcast just two days ago by Swedish TV4, Fossmo admitted that he, contrary to previous statements, took part in the murder of his second wife in the small village of Knutby, Sweden in early 2004, and that he is willing to talk to the police about this, stating "Yes, I will confess and accept to be held responsible for taking part in what's happened, yes."

During the short interview, a few seconds of footage from Fossmo's new home in isolation at maximum security prison Kumla was shown. There is no misunderstanding about the man's current taste in music, as he is silently groovin' along to the spastic surgery rock moderne of This Sect in his padded cell.

Recording of Sect songs (read more below) slowed down and finally came to a halt with the watches of our control room pinpointed at exactly 19:39:00.

Dispatches from sect studio

This weekend we reside in the damp catacombs of the Norwegian Broadcasting Company, recording the follow-up to last year's "Cotard's Syndrome" EP.

Yesterday, drums, bass and guitar was recorded for all four songs scheduled for the EP. While still keeping recording standards high, we stick even more to the DIY principles this time around, recording on a portable 12-track with "Word Riot" producer Gunnar Kjellsby at the controls.

At the time of writing we've started putting Gorak's soar throat on disc. Arek's keys are up next, and an actual Steinway & Sons grand piano will be abused by his slender fingers for one of the tunes! We'll finish the studio session with some additional guitar tracks.

We haven't decided on a mixing venue yet, but hopefully mixing and mastering will commence shortly. Check in later for pictures!

The religious sect of Moscovites called Scoptzky

The Skoptzy (скопцы, also transliterated as Skoptzi, Skoptsi, Scoptsy and other spellings) were a secret sect of Christianity in Russia. It was an offshoot of the sect known as the "People of God". The name itself is plural for "skopets", which is "castrated one" in Russian language, now archaic.

"The remarkable sect of Scoptzy voluntarily mutilate themselves by cutting off their sexual organs. The Scoptzy, in justification of their system of mutilation, build upon certain passages of the New Testament, which, wrongly understood and falsely interpreted, may, in fact, serve as a pretext for this deplorable error. We’ve been getting quite a bit of airplay recently. Harald Are “the Norwegian John Peel” Lund is a personal hero dude of ours, so it sent instant shivers of coolness down our collective sectist spines when he played our tune “They’re by the door now” on his show Dec. 8. Thanks, Mr. MAN! Listen to the show.

Musikkmisjonen’s Kristin Winsents wanted to party like it was 1939, so she played ”Tonite we’re gonna party like it’s 1939” on Dec. 12. Monday Night Fever! Listen to the show.

Seems like we won over some sectoloid followers when we played in Bergen. We’re still getting all hot and bothered when we think of the drunken Polish Punkrock Zombie Dancers. Man, those guys had TIGHT JEANS! Anyway, Studentradioen Bergen has had “The office romance” on their B-list for week 49 and 50 now. Check out their groovy playlist!

When we’re not writing flashy news items about our recent flirts with the airwaves, we’re trying to console our beloved organ donor Arek. This month’s ”Sexy sectist of the month”-award goes to Vebjørn Koksvik. Here he is livin’ la vida loca in Guantanamo Bay, a bitchin’ jet set beach party area often featured on MTV Party Zone. When Vebjørn wasn’t flexing his pectoral abs on the beach he was busy checking out the local cuisine, or simply chillin’ it at the nearest Coca Cola hot spot. 60 Norwegian social workers found themselves suddenly participating in a frenzied dance craze yesterday when This Sect's "Word Riot EP" was played on the stereo at the seminar they attended.

Join our quest for Swedish Soy Pig

Next weekend This Sect is embarking on a pilgrimage to Knutby, Sweden. We will earn money for the return trip by playing a show in Stockholm on January 15th. This unmissable event is taking place at Debaser and is organized by Fritz's Corner.

This will also be a long awaited trip home for our Swedish guitarist Tomak. All Swedish men must live for at least five years in Norway cleaning public toilets, as part of the compensation paid by Sweden for selling us out to the Germans during WW2. This will be Tomak's first trip home in four years, courtesy of those kind people at the Norwegian War Department.

We're entering studio this weekend to record our first EP. After considering Toe Rag and Hitsville studios, we chose Stovner Rockefabrikk for this historic event. Fans worrying that our music might take a turn towards stovner rock, need not despair. We will stay true to our post-crooner-punk-HC-pop-shanty credo.

Arek, organ donor of This Sect, also donated his organs to the TV-series "Et dukkehjem " [A dolls house], running on national Norwegian TV-station NRK1 this autumn. His glorious human form appeared on the show last Thursday. When reading this, you probably can’t remote control yourself, but be not afraid. The show is available at the NRK homepages. This Sect joins in to celebrate the release of Fakta fra verden: Kors på halsen (View cover), an amazing hardcover comic book collection of the series best known from the pages of Larsons gale verden. Fakta fra verden has a deliciously condescending aftertaste that will leave you feeling like an alpha male for days and days after reading it! Karstein Volle is the man with the plan, he’s the fella behind the series. But it doesn’t stop there, he’s also the only Norwegian in Nazca, whom we have played with in Helsinki. And they’re playing the same night! In fact, their gloom-laden and complex sauna-rock is the headlining act! This Sect is proud to be their loyal minions. You can probably also expect some kind of multimedia thingies from Karstein, like comic book art projected on the walls, or something.

But the plot thickens! Gorak wrote the prologue to the book! We’ve shared moonshine in a sauna! We were lovers in a past life! Baby, it never ends.

This Sect is an ever-adaptable machine swinging to each consumerist blow the mass media may bring forth. The latest branch of the mutating tree that is This Sect is the decision we’ve made to hire a full time stylist. Her name is Trinek. She’s fast paced. She’s jetlagged. She’s aware of the latest Cosmopolitan fads faster and smoother than you can say “I’ve got a tumour and it’s got a name”. The first Sectist to undergo the utter ultra-chique style-transformation from her knowing fingers was lead singer Gorak. Formerly a frail, tedious and agoraphobic shell of a human being, he is now an efficient and confident take-no-bulls**t front figure. Swedish sectist loves This Sect

Norwegian-gone-Swedish sect-leader Mullah Helge Fossmo of infamous Knutby Pentecostals recently declared his love for Norwegian rock band This Sect during police interrogation. Investigators found a polaroid picture taken by Fossmo himself just minutes after the murder of his wife in their Knutby home. The revealing picture shows Mullah Fossmo in front of his bathroom mirror.
